SPPU Pune University SGPA to CGPA & Percentage Calculator
Enter your semester SGPAs to get your SPPU CGPA, the percentage under Circular No. 332/2020, and your class. Works for regular and DSE students, with optional credit weighting and a target planner for Distinction.
What Is the SPPU SGPA to CGPA Calculator?
It is a free calculator for students of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), earlier called the University of Pune. You enter the SGPA from each semester grade card, and it gives your cumulative CGPA, the equivalent percentage and your class. It also converts CGPA to percentage and back, and tells you the SGPA you need to reach a target such as Distinction.
What it does that a basic average does not
- It weights semesters by credits when you enter them, which is how the university calculates CGPA.
- It uses the banded percentage formula from SPPU Circular No. 332/2020, not a single rule like CGPA × 9.5.
- It handles DSE (Direct Second Year) students, who start from Semester 3.
- It shows the full working, so you can check every number against your marksheet.
- It works backwards: enter the percentage an employer asks for and it gives the minimum CGPA you need.
How to Use the SPPU SGPA to CGPA Calculator
- Pick your course length. Choose 8 semesters for engineering and pharmacy, 6 for a three-year degree, or 4 for a two-year PG course.
- Turn on DSE if it applies. Semester 1 and 2 disappear and the CGPA starts from Semester 3.
- Type the SGPA from each grade card. Leave semesters you have not finished blank. Blank rows are ignored, so you can check your CGPA at any point in the course.
- Add credits only if they differ. The total credits for each semester are printed on the grade card. If you leave every credit box empty, all semesters count equally.
- Read the result. You get the CGPA, the percentage, the class, your best and weakest semesters, and the exact sum used.
The other two tabs work on their own. Tab 2 converts any CGPA to a percentage, or any percentage to the lowest CGPA that reaches it. Tab 3 plans the SGPA you need in the semesters that are left.
SPPU SGPA to CGPA Formula
SPPU calculates CGPA as a credit-weighted average. Each semester's SGPA is multiplied by the credits of that semester:
When every semester carries the same credits, the credits cancel out and the formula becomes a plain average:
SGPA itself is worked out the same way from your courses in one semester:
When the plain average goes wrong
Suppose one semester has an SGPA of 6.90 over 25 credits and the next has 9.10 over 17 credits. The plain average is (6.90 + 9.10) ÷ 2 = 8.00. The weighted CGPA is (6.90 × 25 + 9.10 × 17) ÷ 42 = 7.79. That is a gap of 0.21, or about 2 percentage points after conversion. If your semesters carry different credits, enter them.
How to Calculate CGPA From SGPA in SPPU (Worked Example)
A second-year engineering student has these four grade cards:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.12 | 20 | 162.40 |
| Semester 2 | 7.64 | 20 | 152.80 |
| Semester 3 | 8.40 | 22 | 184.80 |
| Semester 4 | 7.95 | 22 | 174.90 |
| Total | — | 84 | 674.90 |
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
- Multiply each SGPA by its credits and add the results: 674.90.
- Add the credits: 84.
- Divide: 674.90 ÷ 84 = 8.03. That is the CGPA.
- Convert: 8.03 is in the 6.75–8.24 band, so the percentage is 10 × 8.03 − 7.5 = 72.8%.
- Class: 8.03 is above 7.75, so this is First Class with Distinction territory, provided every course is cleared.
A plain average of the four SGPAs gives 8.03 as well, because the credit loads here are close. The two methods only drift apart when credits differ a lot, as in the example in the formula section. The credit numbers in this table are only an example; use the ones printed on your own grade cards.
SPPU CGPA to Percentage Formula (Circular 332/2020)
SPPU does not use one multiplier for every student. Circular No. 332/2020 splits CGPA into bands and gives each band its own straight-line formula, so that each band maps to a fixed range of marks.
| CGPA band | Formula | Percentage range |
|---|---|---|
| 9.50 – 10.00 | 20 × CGPA − 100 | 90 – 100% |
| 8.25 – 9.49 | 12 × CGPA − 25 | 74 – 88.88% |
| 6.75 – 8.24 | 10 × CGPA − 7.5 | 60 – 74.9% |
| 5.75 – 6.74 | 5 × CGPA + 26.25 | 55 – 59.95% |
| 5.25 – 5.74 | 10 × CGPA − 2.5 | 50 – 54.9% |
| 4.75 – 5.24 | 10 × CGPA − 2.5 | 45 – 49.9% |
| 4.00 – 4.74 | 6.6 × CGPA + 13.6 | 40 – 44.88% |

The (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 shortcut
Many websites and some older SPPU documents use Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. It gives exactly the same answer as the circular for any CGPA from 6.75 to 8.24, which is why most students never notice a difference. Outside that range the two split:
- A 9.00 CGPA is 83% under the circular and 82.5% with the shortcut.
- A 10.00 CGPA is 100% under the circular and only 92.5% with the shortcut.
- A 6.00 CGPA is 56.25% under the circular and 52.5% with the shortcut.
The calculator shows both whenever they differ, so you know which number you are quoting.
One odd spot in the circular
At the 8.25 boundary the published formulas step down instead of up: 8.24 converts to 74.9% but 8.25 converts to 74.0%. As a result the lowest CGPA that reaches 75% is 8.34, not 8.25. The calculator follows the circular as printed and warns you when your CGPA falls in this range.
Do not use CGPA × 9.5
CGPA × 9.5 is the CBSE rule, and some other universities use it too. It does not match SPPU's formula. For an 8.0 CGPA it gives 76%, while SPPU's formula gives 72.5%.

Minimum CGPA for common percentage cut-offs
Many companies screen at 60%, 65% or 70%. Under the circular you need a CGPA of 6.75 for 60%, 7.25 for 65%, 7.75 for 70%, 8.34 for 75% and 8.75 for 80%. Tab 2 of the calculator works out any other cut-off.
SPPU Grading System and Grade Points
Each course gets a letter grade from its total marks, and each letter carries a grade point. This is the 10-point table used in the 2019 pattern for engineering (Choice Based Credit System):
| Grade | Grade point | Marks (out of 100) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 80 – 100 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | 70 – 79 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | 60 – 69 | Very good |
| B+ | 7 | 55 – 59 | Good |
| B | 6 | 50 – 54 | Above average |
| C | 5 | 45 – 49 | Average |
| P | 4 | 40 – 44 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Below 40 | Fail |
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
In the engineering pattern a theory course is usually split into an in-semester exam of 30 marks and an end-semester exam of 70 marks. You need at least 40% in the end-semester exam and 40% overall to pass. Other faculties and the newer NEP-pattern courses use their own tables, so check the rules booklet for your course and year.
Why an F hurts twice
A failed course earns 0 grade points, but its credits still count in the total. It pulls your SGPA down until you clear it. After you clear it, the new grade replaces the zero, but the result may still affect your eligibility for Distinction.
SPPU Class and Distinction Rules
Your class on the degree comes from your final CGPA:
| Final CGPA | Class awarded | Circular % |
|---|---|---|
| 7.75 and above | First Class with Distinction | 70% and above |
| 6.75 – 7.74 | First Class | 60 – 69.9% |
| 6.25 – 6.74 | Higher Second Class | 57.5 – 59.95% |
| 5.50 – 6.24 | Second Class | 52.5 – 57.45% |
| 4.00 – 5.49 | Pass Class | 40 – 52.4% |
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
- The class depends on the final CGPA at the end of the course. A single high or low semester does not decide it.
- Distinction is generally linked to clearing all courses. A student with backlogs may get First Class even with a CGPA above 7.75. Read the exact rule for your pattern.
- Most campus recruiters in Pune screen at 60% or 6.75 CGPA. Some ask for 65% or 70% with no live backlogs.
SGPA vs CGPA in SPPU
| SGPA | CGPA | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | One semester | All semesters so far |
| Built from | Course grade points × credits | Semester SGPAs × credits |
| Where you see it | Every semester grade card | Final-year grade card and transcript |
| Used for | Tracking one semester | Class, percentage, placements, higher studies |

Your Semester 1 SGPA and your CGPA after Semester 1 are the same number. After that, each new semester moves the CGPA less. In Semester 2 a new SGPA carries half the weight. In Semester 8 it carries about one eighth. That is why early semesters matter so much for Distinction.
CGPA Calculation for DSE Students
Direct Second Year (lateral entry) students join engineering in Semester 3 after a diploma. Their SPPU CGPA covers Semesters 3 to 8 only. The diploma result is not part of it.
- Tick the DSE box in tab 1. Semesters 1 and 2 are removed from the form.
- With six semesters in the pool, each one carries about one sixth of the weight, compared with one eighth for regular students. A strong or weak semester moves a DSE student's CGPA more.
- The same percentage formula and class rules apply to DSE students.
How to Reach a Target CGPA
If every semester has the same credits, the average SGPA you need in the remaining semesters is:
Example: a CGPA of 7.40 after four semesters, aiming for Distinction at 7.75 with four semesters left. The required average is (7.75 × 8 − 7.40 × 4) ÷ 4 = 8.10. Four semesters at 8.10 take the final CGPA to 7.75.
If the same student waits until only two semesters are left with the CGPA still at 7.40 after six, the target needs (7.75 × 8 − 7.40 × 6) ÷ 2 = 8.80. The longer you wait, the higher the SGPA you need. Tab 3 does this calculation and tells you if a target is already out of reach.
SPPU SGPA to CGPA FAQs
Multiply each semester SGPA by the credits of that semester, add the results, and divide by the total credits. If every semester has the same credits, this is the same as adding all your SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters. Example: SGPAs of 8.12, 7.64, 8.40 and 7.95 with equal credits give (8.12 + 7.64 + 8.40 + 7.95) / 4 = 8.03.
SPPU Circular No. 332/2020 uses a different formula for each CGPA band: 20 x CGPA - 100 for 9.50 and above, 12 x CGPA - 25 for 8.25 to 9.49, 10 x CGPA - 7.5 for 6.75 to 8.24, 5 x CGPA + 26.25 for 5.75 to 6.74, 10 x CGPA - 2.5 for 4.75 to 5.74, and 6.6 x CGPA + 13.6 for 4.00 to 4.74. A CGPA of 8.0 is 72.5 percent.
Only between CGPA 6.75 and 8.24. In that range both formulas give the same answer. Outside it they differ: a 9.0 CGPA is 83 percent under the circular but 82.5 percent with the shortcut, and a 10.0 is 100 percent under the circular but only 92.5 percent with the shortcut. Use the circular value unless your college or employer asks for a different rule.
You need a CGPA of 6.75 for 60 percent. For 65 percent you need 7.25, for 70 percent 7.75, for 75 percent 8.34, and for 80 percent 8.75. These come from the Circular 332/2020 formula. The Percentage to CGPA box in the calculator works out any other value.
A CGPA of 7.75 or more, which converts to 70 percent. First Class is 6.75 to 7.74, Higher Second Class is 6.25 to 6.74, Second Class is 5.50 to 6.24 and Pass Class is 4.00 to 5.49. Distinction is usually tied to clearing every course, so a backlog can affect it even if your CGPA is above 7.75. Check the rules for your own pattern.
Direct Second Year students start from Semester 3, so their CGPA uses Semesters 3 to 8 only. Turn on the DSE option in the calculator and the Semester 1 and 2 fields are removed. Your diploma marks are not part of the SPPU CGPA.
No. SGPA is a grade point average on a 10-point scale for one semester. To get a percentage you still have to convert it. Many students apply the same Circular 332/2020 formula to a semester SGPA to get a rough semester percentage, and the calculator shows that for each semester, but only the final CGPA conversion is used on your degree.
The usual reasons are unequal semester credits, a semester with a backlog that was later cleared, or rounding. Enter the credits printed on each semester grade card and the difference usually disappears. If it does not, trust the marksheet, because the university works from course-level grade points.
The lowest CGPA band in the conversion table starts at 4.00, which equals 40 percent. Below that the circular gives no percentage. You also need to clear every course; a good CGPA does not make up for a failed subject.
Yes for the SGPA to CGPA part, because averaging SGPAs by credits works the same way in every faculty. Choose 6 semesters for a three-year degree or 4 for a two-year PG course. The percentage and class rules on this page come from the engineering pattern, so check your own faculty rules before quoting a percentage.
