What Is a Half Birthday?

A half birthday is the date six months after your birthday. It is the day you are exactly halfway between two ages: 8½, 21½, 40½. If your birthday is 15 June, your half birthday is 15 December.

It is not an official date. Nothing changes legally on a half birthday. Families mark it for fun, for a baby’s six-month milestone, or to give a child a school celebration when the real birthday falls in the holidays.

Quick answer: same day number, six months later. Only birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st need a small adjustment, explained below.

How to Calculate Your Half Birthday

  1. Write down your birth month as a number (January = 1, December = 12).
  2. Add 6.
  3. If the result is more than 12, subtract 12.
  4. Keep the same day of the month.
  5. If that day does not exist in the new month, use the last day of that month.
Half-birthday month = Birth month + 6  (subtract 12 if over 12) Half-birthday day   = Birth day, or the last day of that month if shorter

Example: born on 22 September. 9 + 6 = 15, and 15 − 12 = 3. The half birthday is 22 March. It falls in the next calendar year, because September plus six months crosses New Year.

How Many Months Is a Half Birthday?

A half birthday is 6 months after your birthday, and another 6 months before the next one. So every year has two “birthdays”: the real one and the half one, spaced six months apart.

Each month is paired with the month six places away. The pairs never change:

Jan ↔ Jul
Feb ↔ Aug
Mar ↔ Sep
Apr ↔ Oct
May ↔ Nov
Jun ↔ Dec

If you remember your pair, you already know your half-birthday month.

Is a Half Birthday 6 Months or 182 Days?

Six calendar months are not always the same number of days. Depending on your birth month, six months is anywhere from 181 to 184 days (birthdays on the 29th to 31st can be a little shorter):

Birthday inSix months laterDays in between
January, February, September, NovemberJuly, August, March, May181 (182 if 29 Feb falls in between)
October, DecemberApril, June182 (183 if 29 Feb falls in between)
April, JuneOctober, December183
March, May, July, AugustSeptember, November, January, February184

Half of a normal 365-day year is 182.5 days. In a year that includes 29 February it is exactly 183 days. So “6 months” and “182 days” are two different ways to measure, and they can point to dates up to two days apart. Most people and most calculators use 6 calendar months. This calculator shows both.

Half Birthday Calculator by Date of Birth

The calculator at the top of this page needs only the day and month. Add the birth year if you also want the age in halves.

  • Date and weekday: the next half birthday, or the one in any year you choose, with the day of the week.
  • Countdown: how many days are left, or “today” if it is today.
  • Age: with a birth year, it tells you the age on that day, for example 6½.
  • Exact midpoint: the true halfway point of the year, for comparison.
  • Next six years: the date and weekday for six half birthdays, with weekends marked, so you can plan a party.
  • Reverse lookup: pick any date to see whose half birthday it is.
Privacy: the calculator runs in your browser. Your birth date is not sent or saved anywhere.

How to Find Your Half Birthday This Year

Which half of the year your birthday is in decides where this year’s half birthday lands:

  • Birthday from January to June: this year’s half birthday comes later in the same year, between July and December.
  • Birthday from July to December: this year’s half birthday already happened earlier in the year, between January and June. It belongs to last year’s birthday. Your next one is in the following year.

For example, in 2026 someone born on 10 November had a half birthday on 10 May 2026. The next one is 10 May 2027. To check a specific year, change “Show the half birthday for” in the calculator.

What Happens If Your Birthday Is on the 29th, 30th, or 31st?

Most month-end birthdays are fine. Only these birthdays land on a day that does not exist six months later:

BirthdayMissing dateLast day of month ruleRoll-over rule
31 March31 September30 September1 October
31 May31 November30 November1 December
29 August29 Feb (non-leap years)28 February1 March
30 August30 February28/29 February2 March (1 March in leap years)
31 August31 February28/29 February3 March (2 March in leap years)
31 October31 April30 April1 May
31 December31 June30 June1 July

The last-day-of-month rule is the usual choice, because it keeps the half birthday in the correct month. The roll-over rule counts the extra days into the next month instead. Either is fine, since there is no official rule. Birthdays on 31 January and 31 July have no problem, because July and January both have 31 days.

How Is a Half Birthday Calculated for February 29 Birthdays?

Leap-day babies get the easiest half birthday of all: 29 August, every year. February plus six months is August, and August always has a 29th.

So while the real birthday has to move to 28 February or 1 March in three years out of four, the half birthday never moves. For many people born on 29 February, 29 August is the only “birthday” they can celebrate on the right date every year.

If you use the exact-midpoint method instead, the date can shift slightly. From a real 29 February, or from a 28 February celebration two years before a leap year, the next birthday is 365 days away, so the midpoint is midday on 29 August. In the year just before a leap year, the next birthday (29 February) is 366 days away, so the midpoint moves to 30 August.

When Do People Celebrate Half Birthdays?

  • Babies at six months. A baby’s first half birthday is a real milestone. Parents often take a monthly photo and mark six months with a small cake or a photo shoot.
  • Holiday birthdays. Children born during the summer or winter school holidays often celebrate their half birthday at school, so they can share treats with their class.
  • Birthdays close to big festivals. People born near Christmas, New Year or Diwali sometimes feel their birthday gets lost. A half birthday gives them a day that is only theirs.
  • Couples and friends. A half birthday is a good excuse for a small surprise between birthdays, such as half a cake or a card that says “Happy ½ Birthday”.
  • Leap-day babies. 29 August is a fixed date to celebrate every year.

The calculator marks which of the next six half birthdays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, which helps if you are planning a party.

Half Birthday vs. Exact Midpoint of a Year

The half birthday uses calendar months. The exact midpoint splits the days between two birthdays in two. They usually differ by one or two days:

Birthday (2026)Half birthday (6 months)Exact midpoint (182.5 days)Gap
15 January15 July 202616 July 2026, midday1 day later
31 March30 September 202629 September 2026, midday1 day earlier
15 July15 January 202713 January 2027, midday2 days earlier
31 August28 February 20271 March 2027, midday1 day later
25 December25 June 202725 June 2027, middaySame day

Swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Birthdays in March, May, July and August show the biggest gap, because the six months after them hold 184 days, a day and a half more than half a year. The midpoint lands at midday because 365 is an odd number: half of it is 182 days and 12 hours. When the year ahead includes 29 February, it is 366 days and the midpoint is exactly 183 days later.

How to Calculate a Half Birthday Without a Calculator

The month-pair method

Remember the six pairs: Jan–Jul, Feb–Aug, Mar–Sep, Apr–Oct, May–Nov, Jun–Dec. Swap your birth month for its partner and keep the day.

The knuckle check for month-end dates

If your birthday is on the 29th, 30th or 31st, check whether the partner month is long enough. Count on your knuckles: every knuckle is a 31-day month, every gap between knuckles is a shorter one. If the partner month lands on a gap, use its last day: 30, or 28 in February (29 in a leap year).

Counting days on a calendar

For the exact midpoint, count 182 days forward from your birthday and add half a day. Adding 26 weeks gets you to 182 days quickly, and the date will also fall on the same weekday as your birthday that year.

Half Birthday FAQs

A half birthday is the day six months after your birthday, when you are exactly halfway between two ages. If you were born on 15 January, your half birthday is 15 July, the day you turn 10 and a half, 25 and a half, and so on.

Add 6 to your birth month. If the answer is more than 12, subtract 12. Keep the same day. So 10 March becomes 10 September and 20 October becomes 20 April. If that day does not exist in the new month, use the last day of that month.

Most people use 6 calendar months. That is between 181 and 184 days, depending on the months in between. Exactly half a year is 182.5 days, or 183 days in a year that includes 29 February. The two methods can be up to 2 days apart.

February has no 31st, so the usual rule moves it to the last day of February: 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year. Some people prefer to roll over into March, which gives 3 March (or 2 March in a leap year). The calculator lets you choose either rule.

It is 29 August every year. August always has 29 days, so a leap-day birthday gets its half birthday on the same date every year, even in years when the birthday itself has to move to 28 February or 1 March.

The date stays the same for most people. Only birthdays on 29, 30 or 31 August change between 28 and 29 February, depending on whether the year is a leap year. The day of the week changes every year, which the calculator shows for the next six years.

The most common reasons are a baby turning six months old, a child whose real birthday falls in the school holidays, and people born close to Christmas, New Year or another big festival who want a day that is only about them.

Yes. Use the second box on the calculator. Pick any date and it lists the birthdays whose half birthday falls on that day. For example, 28 February in a non-leap year is the half birthday of anyone born on 28, 29, 30 or 31 August.
