Quick answer: Black Moon Lilith is the lunar apogee, the point where the Moon’s orbit is farthest from Earth. To find yours, enter your birth date, time and place above. Mean Lilith spends about 9 months in each sign, so the date alone gives your sign. Time and place add the degree, the house and True Lilith, which can sit up to 30° away. If calculators disagree, it’s almost always Mean versus True.

What Is Black Moon Lilith?

Black Moon Lilith isn’t a planet or a moon. It’s a calculated point: the apogee of the Moon’s orbit, where the Moon is farthest from Earth. Because the orbit is an ellipse that slowly turns, the apogee travels through the zodiac, completing a full circle in about 8 years and 10 months (8.85 years). Opposite it is the perigee, the closest point, which some astrologers call Priapus.

Astrologers named the point after Lilith, who in Jewish folklore is Adam’s first wife and refused to be subordinate. In a chart, Black Moon Lilith represents what is raw, rejected or suppressed: desires, anger, sexuality and independence you learned to hide, and the power you get back by owning them. Its sign shows the style of that energy, and its house shows the area of life where it plays out.

How to Calculate Your Black Moon Lilith Sign

  1. Enter your birth date. This alone fixes your Mean Lilith sign in nearly all cases.
  2. Add your birth time for the exact degree and True Lilith. If you don’t know it, tick “I don’t know my birth time”. The calculator then uses noon and tells you if Lilith changed sign during the day.
  3. Choose your birth place. It sets the time zone, including historical daylight saving and war time, and the coordinates needed for houses.
  4. Pick a zodiac (tropical for Western astrology, or a sidereal ayanamsa for Vedic) and a house system.
  5. Read the result. You get Mean and True Lilith with sign, degree and house, a chart wheel and an interpretation.

Behind the scenes, your local birth time is converted to Universal Time and then to Terrestrial Time (ΔT). The Moon’s orbit is then calculated for that moment:

  • Mean Lilith comes from the mean lunar apogee, projected onto the ecliptic.
  • True Lilith comes from the Moon’s position and speed, which give the shape of its orbit at that moment (the osculating ellipse). The apogee of that ellipse is True Lilith.

Black Moon Lilith Sign Calculator by Birth Date

Mean Lilith moves about 40.7° a year, roughly 0.11° a day. So nearly everyone born on the same day, anywhere in the world, has the same Mean Lilith sign. The exceptions are the one or two days a year when it changes sign. Use the Lilith sign dates tab to see when Mean Lilith moved between signs in any year from 1800 to 2100, in tropical or sidereal zodiac. If your birthday falls on a change date, add your birth time to be sure.

True Lilith is different. It wobbles back and forth and can change sign 20 or more times a year, so a date alone isn’t enough for it.

Black Moon Lilith House Calculator

The house needs your Ascendant, which moves through all 12 signs in 24 hours. That means you need an accurate birth time, to within about 15 minutes, and your birth place. The calculator works out the Ascendant, the Midheaven and all 12 cusps, then finds the house that contains Lilith. Four house systems are included:

SystemHow houses are drawnUsed by
PlacidusDivides the time each degree takes to rise and culminate; houses are unequal.Default on most Western sites and apps
Whole SignThe rising sign is the whole 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on.Hellenistic and Vedic astrology, many modern astrologers
EqualTwelve 30° houses measured from the exact Ascendant degree.Traditional British astrology, high latitudes
PorphyryEach quadrant between the angles is split into three equal parts.Classical astrology; fallback near the poles

Lilith can land in a different house in each system, especially near a cusp. Placidus can’t be calculated above about 66° latitude, so the calculator switches to Porphyry there and tells you.

What Birth Details Are Needed for a Lilith Calculation?

You knowYou getAccuracy
Birth date onlyMean Lilith sign; approximate True LilithMean sign is exact unless Lilith changed sign that day

Time zone tip: older birth times are where most errors come from. India used UTC+6:30 “war time” in parts of 1942–45, and many countries have changed their daylight saving rules. The calculator reads these from the time zone database automatically. Check the “Calculated for … UTC” line under your result, and use a fixed offset if you know the zone was different.

Mean Lilith vs. True Lilith

The Moon’s orbit is constantly pulled out of shape by the Sun, so astrologers use two versions of Lilith:

Mean Lilith

The average apogee. It moves smoothly forward at about 3.3° a month and never turns retrograde. It is the most widely used version and the default on many sites.

True (osculating) Lilith

The actual apogee of the Moon’s orbit at your birth moment. It swings up to about 30° either side of Mean Lilith, sometimes moves backwards, and can change sign many times a year.

Neither is “wrong”. They answer different questions. Many astrologers start with Mean Lilith because it is stable, and use True Lilith for precise work. A third version, the interpolated or “natural” apogee, smooths out the osculating orbit’s artificial wobble. It sits between the two, and a few programs offer it. If your Mean and True Lilith are in different signs, the calculator points it out. Read both descriptions and notice which fits.

Black Moon Lilith Sign and Degree

Your result reads like 14°22′ Scorpio: 14 degrees and 22 minutes into Scorpio, which spans 30 degrees. The degree shows how Lilith connects to the rest of your chart:

  • Conjunctions (within about 3°) with the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or the Ascendant make Lilith a strong personal theme.
  • 0° or 29° sits at the edge of a sign. Double-check your birth time and look at both signs.
  • Sidereal degrees are about 24° lower than tropical today, because of the ayanamsa. Tropical 14° Scorpio is roughly sidereal 20° Libra. The calculator also gives the nakshatra and pada in sidereal mode.

Black Moon Lilith in the 12 Houses

1st house: Lilith in the 1st house colours how you come across: intense, magnetic or hard to ignore. You may have been judged for your appearance or directness. Owning your presence instead of shrinking it is the lesson.

2nd house: In the 2nd house the shadow sits around money, possessions and self-worth. There can be feast-or-famine patterns or shame about wanting security. Earning and valuing on your own terms brings stability.

3rd house: In the 3rd house Lilith lives in communication, siblings and early learning. You might have been silenced or labelled difficult for speaking up. Writing, teaching or speaking uncomfortable truths can become your strength.

4th house: In the 4th house the wound is rooted in home, family and one parent in particular. You may have felt like an outsider in your own family. Creating a home life that truly fits you is deeply healing.

5th house: In the 5th house Lilith affects romance, creativity, play and children. Pleasure and self-expression may feel risky or taboo. Creative work and love affairs can be powerfully liberating once shame is released.

6th house: In the 6th house it shows up in work routines, health and service. Burnout, rebellion against drudgery or body issues are possible. Designing work and habits that respect your nature is the fix.

7th house: In the 7th house Lilith appears through partners and close one-to-one relationships. You may attract intense or controlling partners, or refuse commitment. Relationships based on equality and honesty transform this placement.

8th house: In the 8th house, Lilith’s natural home, themes of sex, death, shared money and psychological depth are amplified. Power struggles and taboos are likely. Deep emotional honesty brings great regenerative power.

9th house: In the 9th house the charge sits in beliefs, travel, higher learning and religion. You may break with inherited faith or teachers. Finding and teaching your own philosophy is the gift.

10th house: In the 10th house Lilith is visible in career, reputation and relations with authority. You may be seen as controversial or clash with bosses. Pursuing a public role that lets you stay true to yourself is powerful.

11th house: In the 11th house it shows up in friendships, groups and hopes for the future. You may feel you never quite fit in, or be the group’s rebel. Communities that welcome your differences bring out the best in it.

12th house: In the 12th house Lilith works through the unconscious, solitude and hidden patterns. Its energy may be repressed or show up in dreams and self-sabotage. Therapy, spirituality and creative solitude help bring it to light.

Black Moon Lilith in the 12 Zodiac Signs

Lilith in Aries: Raw independence and anger are the charged themes. You may have learned early that putting yourself first was “selfish”, so the urge to act alone either explodes or gets swallowed. Owning your right to start things, compete and say no turns this Lilith into fearless initiative.

Lilith in Taurus: Lilith here touches pleasure, the body and security. There can be shame around wanting comfort, money or sensual enjoyment, or a stubborn refusal to be owned by anyone. Healing comes through trusting your own values and enjoying your senses without guilt.

Lilith in Gemini: Words are the battleground. You may have felt unheard, told you talk too much, or that your ideas were dangerous. This placement often produces sharp, taboo-breaking thinkers and writers once they stop censoring themselves.

Lilith in Cancer: Needs for safety, mothering and belonging carry the wound. There may be mixed feelings about dependency, family or motherhood itself. Reclaiming this Lilith means nurturing yourself first and defining “home” on your own terms.

Lilith in Leo: The urge to be seen, admired and creative gets suppressed or overdone. You may swing between hiding your light and demanding the spotlight. Expressing yourself boldly, without needing permission or applause, is the medicine.

Lilith in Virgo: Perfectionism, the body and usefulness are loaded. Criticism, inner or outer, can feel like a cage, and there may be tension around health, purity or service. Accepting imperfection while keeping your high standards turns this into precise, healing skill.

Lilith in Libra: Relationships and fairness hold the shadow. You may have kept the peace at your own expense, or rebelled against being the agreeable partner. Balanced, honest partnerships where you keep your own voice are where this Lilith finds power.

Lilith in Scorpio: Lilith’s intensity is at home here: sex, power, secrets and transformation. Jealousy, control or fear of being consumed can surface. Facing the depths honestly gives unusual psychological insight and resilience.

Lilith in Sagittarius: Freedom, belief and truth are the flashpoints. You may reject dogma fiercely or have been shamed for questioning. Following your own philosophy and speaking your truth, even when it’s unpopular, is how this placement heals.

Lilith in Capricorn: Authority, ambition and control carry the charge. There can be conflict with rules and those in power, or harsh self-discipline. Building your own structures and defining success on your terms turns this into formidable leadership.

Lilith in Aquarius: Belonging versus being different is the tension. You may feel like the outsider or rebel in every group. Embracing your uniqueness and using it for collective change, rather than isolation, releases this Lilith’s gifts.

Lilith in Pisces: Boundaries, sacrifice and spirituality are tender. There may be a pull to escape, rescue others or dissolve into someone else. Grounded compassion, creativity and clear boundaries turn sensitivity into strength.

We checked this calculator against the Swiss Ephemeris, the library behind many professional astrology programs and sites, on 60 random birth charts from 1900 to 2035. Mean Lilith matched to within 1 arc-second. The Ascendant and house cusps matched to within 0.001°, and the Lahiri ayanamsa to within a fraction of an arc-second. True Lilith matched to within about 0.2° (12 arc-minutes). True Lilith is very sensitive to the lunar theory used, so expect a few arc-minutes of difference between any two programs.

Black Moon Lilith Calculator FAQs

What is my Black Moon Lilith sign?

Enter your birth date above. Your Mean Lilith sign only needs the date, because Mean Lilith spends about nine months in each sign. Add your birth time and place to get the exact degree, True Lilith and the house Lilith falls in.

Should I use Mean or True Lilith?

Both are valid. Mean Lilith is the smoothed average position and is the most widely used. True (osculating) Lilith is the actual apogee at your birth moment and can differ by up to about 30 degrees. If they fall in different signs, read both and see which description resonates.

Can I calculate Lilith without a birth time?

Yes, for the sign. Mean Lilith moves only about 0.11 degrees a day, so the sign is almost always the same all day. The house needs an accurate birth time and place, and True Lilith can move a few degrees in a day.

Does this work for Vedic or sidereal astrology?

Yes. Choose a sidereal zodiac (Lahiri, Fagan-Bradley, Raman or Krishnamurti) and the calculator subtracts the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today, and shows the rashi and nakshatra. Lilith isn’t part of classical Vedic astrology, but many sidereal astrologers use it.

Which house system should I use for Lilith?

Use the system you normally read your chart in. Whole Sign is popular in Hellenistic and Vedic practice; Placidus is the default on most Western sites. Lilith can change house between systems, especially near a cusp.

Why is my Lilith different on Astro-Seek, Astro.com or Cafe Astrology?

Usually because one site shows Mean Lilith and another shows True Lilith, or one uses a sidereal zodiac. Time zone mistakes for older birth dates also shift the result. This calculator shows Mean and True side by side and the exact UTC time it used.

Is Black Moon Lilith the same as asteroid Lilith?

No. Black Moon Lilith is a point in the Moon’s orbit (the apogee). Asteroid Lilith, number 1181, is a real rock in the asteroid belt and is usually in a completely different sign.

How accurate is this calculator?

Mean Lilith matches the Swiss Ephemeris to within a second of arc, Ascendant and house cusps to within 0.001 degrees, and True Lilith to within about 0.2 degrees. The biggest source of error in practice is an incorrect birth time or time zone.

Is my birth data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. If you turn on online place search, only the place name you type is sent to the free Open-Meteo geocoding service.
